Crazy Redheads

I cringe at the smile twitching at Dr. Alex’s mouth. He is very conservative in his expectations of women – seen and not heard is more like it. Despite this, he’s the best doctor I had been to, and he knows how severe my condition is. Finding a new doctor was not in my best interest.

“Hello, Dr. Alex, how are you?” My father shoots me a disapproving glare and steps forward to shake the amused doctor’s hand.

“I’m well. My wife and I flew out before the storm hit and just arrived back this morning. I understand you weren’t that lucky.” His gaze flickers to me in Ryan’s arms.

“No. Celine got stuck at our beach house and then had to evacuate during the storm. She walked about fifteen to twenty miles in two days.”

“Is that all? Just an overextension of the leg muscles, perhaps?”

“No, she almost drowned, and she hasn’t been in a pool since the surgeries.”

“Ah, this isn’t good. Come into the room. There could be some torn nerves and muscles, so I need to take look. Ryan, bring her in here, and then you all can wait outside.”

Speaking for the first time, I look at my mother. “Mom?” She must see the uncertainty and fear in my eyes because she steps forward with Ryan.

“I’ll come, too.” Dr. Alex looks like he’s going to decline, but instead, he nods his head and leads us into the first room.

Ryan puts me on the bed and kisses the top of my head. “You are strongest person I know, Cece,” he whispers in my ear before he pulls away and walks out of the room, closing the door on his way out.

“Celine, can you explain the pain to me and show me where it is?”

Pulling my loose pant legs up, I show him my black and blue discolored legs. His eyes grow wide, but he doesn’t say anything. My mother gasps loudly from beside me. “My baby, you didn’t tell me.” I hear pain in Mom’s soft voice.

“There’s a constant raging burn, then I can’t move my legs at all. The pain takes my breath away each time. Every time I hold my own weight, I fall. I’ve been taking Tylenol every four hours for the last five days, and the pain hasn’t subsided. It’s unbearable, and I just can’t take it anymore.”

I start to cry with the last admittance. My mother reaches for my hand and clutches it tightly in hers. I can feel her trying to take my pain away, but she can’t.

“Does the pain start in your upper thigh area and shoot down through your calves? Predominately in the back of your legs?”

“Yes; it just keeps getting worse.”

He nods, a hand on his chin, thinking. “Do you mind if I start a physical exam?” I flinch, the idea of his hands on my legs making me want to scream. “I’ll be careful, my dear. I need to touch the area to make my conclusion.”

“Okay.” The word comes out as a soft cry.
